If you were placing bets on where the next great independent tool watch was going to emerge from, your finger was probably hovering over a map of the Jura Mountains, or a workshop somewhere in Glashütte. You almost certainly weren't looking at San Juan, Puerto Rico. But while many European watch companies have been busy recycling 50-year-old designs and quietly hiking their prices, Santurce Collection has been building a steel watch that you’ll actually want to wear and scratch up, instead of just babying at a desk.

Santurce Collection’s tagline is a bit like a verbal handshake between insiders. This brand is the deliberate brainchild of José and Anita Salas (above) – the stalwarts behind RedBar Puerto Rico. They’re both hardcore, obsessed collectors who decided to channel their encyclopedic knowledge of watches into real, tangible objects. The district of Santurce itself provides the city’s cultural, artistic, gritty heartbeat, so naming a watch brand after this specific neighborhood is a massive statement of intent, telling you immediately that these watches possess a distinctly Caribbean spirit.
Santurce Collection's Price Point
At $1,000, a three-handed steel diver from Santurce definitely makes you pause, since you can jump onto any watch forum right now and find a dozen microbrands offering similar specs for half that amount. So, to justify that price tag, Santurce really has to deliver on the details that don't show up on paper. The vast majority of affordable microbrands, however, utilize catalog parts, pointing to a pre-designed steel case and a generic dial stamped with a logo. José and Anita committed to fully custom tooling, meaning every single angle, bevel, and curve is designed from scratch. Developing bespoke steel cases requires massive upfront tooling costs, which naturally sets the floor for what these watches have to cost.
More importantly, Santurce drops the Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1 into its flagship divers. This is a tractor engine of a movement, beating at a smooth 28,800 vibrations per hour. It features hacking seconds for precise time-setting, and offers a 38-hour power reserve. By utilizing this widely respected caliber, José and Anita ensure that each watch keeps ticking for decades. Plus, any competent watchmaker on the planet can open up a Santurce case and service this movement using readily available components. In the long run, it’s an investment that pays for itself in headaches avoided. You get bespoke exterior beauty without the anxiety of costly services and repairs.
The Dimensions of a Santurce Collection Watch
Santurce nails watch dimensions. The El Tiburón (Shark, below) and Picúa (Barracuda, above) are examples of modern tool watches that don’t wear like huge chunks of metal on the wrist, despite being named after fierce predatory marine fish. The cases measure a versatile 39mm in diameter and sit at a highly manageable 12mm thick, easily sliding under the cuff of a shirt. Crucially, the lug-to-lug span is constrained to a compact 45-46mm.
For a standard 6.5-to-7-inch wrist, the proportions strike a great balance, delivering wrist presence but without the often undesirable bulk of a typical tool watch. The lug-to-lug span is really what enables the watches to sit so comfortably on the wrist, paired, of course, with a sharply downturned lug profile that ensures the watch hugs the arm rather than overhanging the edges. The build quality continues with superb finishing. Brushed surfaces and high-polish chamfers deliver an execution that you’d usually see on much higher-priced timepieces.
In a nutshell, the main reason Santurce is getting traction with collectors is because its cases, according to many of them, feel incredibly solid in the hand and totally custom. Even with 300 meters of water resistance, the brand manages to keep the case thin enough and the lug curvature aggressive. The lines and finishes are sharp and feel premium, too.
Dive Specs and the Oversized Crown
Santurce divers are rated to 300 meters of water resistance and feature dials protected by a slab of flat sapphire crystal, generously coated with anti-reflective treatment on the underside to kill glare. The bezel mechanism is where Santurce delivers a beautifully machined, 120-click unidirectional construction filled with a scratch-resistant ceramic insert. Collectors report that the action itself feels crisp with zero frustrating back-play.
Then there’s the crown. Oversized and deeply knurled, it’s arguably the defining physical characteristic of the case design, demonstrating a successful bit of user interface engineering. Rather than heavily recessed and protected by massive guards, the crown of the El Tiburón grips easily even if your hands are wet with saltwater. It unscrews with a buttery smoothness and the winding positions are designed to snap into place with an audible mechanical click.
Dial Dynamics and BGW9 Brilliance
The dials of Santurce Collection watches are deeply saturated, featuring stunning sunburst finishes that emulate the shifting tones of the waters surrounding Puerto Rico. The Horizon: Pitirre and Guarauao
Staying safely in the lane of the robust steel diver is the easy route, but to prove this Caribbean watch brand is no one-trick pony, Santurce is actively pivoting its gaze toward the skies with its upcoming pilot-inspired watches: the Pitirre and the Guaraguao. Collectors are quite excited about the collections, which demonstrate that this brand is comfortably evolving beyond its oceanic roots to tackle the wildly saturated aviation genre. The Pitirre, named after a feisty, highly agile local bird known for defending its territory against much larger predators, is expected to be a streamlined, time-only proposition. It strips away the dive bezel to maximize dial real estate, making it a great grab-and-go daily wearer.
The Guaraguao (above), named after the imposing Red-tailed Hawk that circles the island, introduces GMT functionality to the lineup, balancing the addition of a fourth hand and an external 24-hour scale without making the dial look too technical. Assuming Santurce applies good spatial balance to this model, it will be a formidable piece of hardware for the modern traveler.
The Verdict on Santurce Collection Watches
Is Santurce Collection a genuinely good brand? If you’re hunting for a piece that will inexplicably double in value on the secondary market, look elsewhere. Santurce isn’t speculative hype bait. But if you’re looking for a brand name that impresses people with its build and functionality, then yes, absolutely.
Amongst hundreds of other independent brands flooding the market, Santurce operates as a brand made by real people for real people. I recently got my Picua and I can’t put it down! The quality is superb, the finish, the bezel action, the lume! oh the lume! It’s also the very definition of a strap monster, it wears so well with a nato strap, get a red one! You won’t be disappointed. Everything is so intentional and so carefully curated. And now I’m part of this growing community that Anita and Jose have created, if this is what watch collecting is all about then sign me up for life because I will always be a Santurce fan!

I’ve spent a lot of time wearing both the Santurce Collection Mocho and the Tiburón, and they’ve both earned my respect. By the nature of my work, my watches are exposed to mud, thick vegetation, rocks, concrete, steel, and the relentless Puerto Rican weather. They’re not collectibles—they’re tools. The Mocho has been an outstanding field watch. Its Swiss solar movement makes it the perfect grab-and-go companion, and it has handled the abuse of my daily work without missing a beat. Although the Tiburón was designed as a dive watch, it has become one of my favorite field watches as well. It’s incredibly comfortable, exceptionally legible, and built with the kind of toughness you appreciate after long days outdoors. Both watches are absolute spec monsters. More importantly, those specs translate into real-world performance. They punch well above their weight in both looks and performance, competing with watches that cost considerably more.
What I appreciate most is that Santurce Collection isn’t trying to copy anyone else. They’ve created watches with their own identity while delivering outstanding quality and value. You can tell it’s a brand built by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts. For someone who values well-designed tools, that’s something I genuinely appreciate. I’m new to the St. Turce Collection community, but I’ve already become a big fan. I currently own several Nivada Grenchen watches, and my next purchase will most likely be either the Picúa or the Tiburón. I was so happy when I saw this article pop up! I found the brand earlier this year and have loved it ever since. The Picúa which ive had since March, is a beast of a watch. It can handle anything while simultaneously being so comfortable. More than the watch itself, ive loved the community José and Anita have built! They truly are a genuine, passionate, and caring duo. Im proud to see a Puerto Rican brand leave such a mark in this hobby of ours. Its a triumph for the rest of Latin America.
