It was spring 2023, and I was in Geneva as I usually am this time of year at Watches and Wonders. This was an eventful year of releases, and one of the brands that dominated the discourse was IWC with the relaunch of the Ingenieur, which paid tribute to its 1970s Gerald Genta connections. Up until this point, I liked previous generations of the Ingenieur, yet not enough to ever consider owning one myself. Then I walked over to the IWC booth, where I had about 30 minutes in a dimly lit room to photograph the entire lineup. As I started trying them on, one watch immediately stood apart from the rest: the aqua dial.
The cross-hatched texture, the way the bracelet flowed into the case, the proportions, everything clicked. And while integrated sports watches typically live in a world of black, blue, and silver dials, this green-blue aqua color felt genuinely fresh. It combined two of my favorite dial colors into one watch, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
After Watches and Wonders, I eventually convinced myself the feeling would pass. Months went by, and I managed to resist the temptation.
Until Google kept reminding me.
Every time I searched “IWC Ingenieur,” the image preview beside the search results wasn’t a press photo; it was a picture of that exact aqua-dial Ingenieur…on my wrist. The very photo taken the day I first tried it on in Geneva.
Every search became a reminder of the watch I had talked myself out of buying and eventually, I gave in.
