Some Of The Best 36mm Watches For Every Budget

Among the many odd design quirks of the watch industry in the 1990s was the penchant for outsized watches. Anywhere from 40mm to 45mm was the norm, even though only a decade earlier, in the mid 1980s, the standard case diameter of a men’s watch was a mere 35mm. They had busy dials and multiple layers and functions, and some were chunky enough to double as hockey pucks or shuffleboard disks. The recent return-to-vintage trend finally scaled case diameters down to more wearable, discreet sizes, and many watches are now under 40mm, with some touting 36mm as the new ideal – not too small for a man and not too big for a women. A new generation of ultra-thin automatic movements has helped make it possible to scale things back without compromising power reserve or accuracy (All hail the micro-rotor and the optimized mainspring). Here are 10 examples of 36mm watches (or, thereabouts) that show why it has become comfortable to wear a watch again.

The “full rose” in this title refers to the pink hue of the dial; the 36mm case is stainless steel. It is powered by an in-house, hand wound movement with a 53-hour power reserve. The pink dial, blue minute indicators, orange small seconds hand and Arabic/Roman California-style dial (lit with Super-LumiNova) add a fun summer vibe to the otherwise stark, Bauhaus design.

Even so-called adventure watches like the Tudor Ranger are now available in 36mm references (adding to the existing 39mm models). The new reference has a “dune white” dial (a reference to the deserts that this “expedition” watch is meant to traverse). It is water resistant to 100 meters. It contains the in-house Caliber MT5400 automatic with a 70-hour power reserve, and comes on a steel bracelet or fabric strap with green, red and beige stripes.

It’s rare to see a pilot’s watch under 40mm, since one of the characteristics of the genre is to have large indications, spread across a large dial for legibility reasons. This 36mm version is scaled to retain readability despite retaining the tri-compax chronograph layout. (Although, for modern pilot’s watches, design has long trumped function, since pilots now use on-board instrumentation for navigation). The lacquered dials come in Cirrus White or Stratus Gray.

The multicolored lacquer dial, covered with the Jubilee motif (made up of repeating Rolex logos), is so striking that this 36mm reference looks bigger than it is. This interpretation of the 1926 Oyster is part of Rolex’s recent joyful turn for its newer OP references: the addition of bold colors and groovy graphic patterns. The usual superb construction (100 meter water resistance), proprietary materials (Oystersteel) and state-of-the-art movement (Caliber 3230 with Chronergy escapement) keep things serious.

The Zenith Defy Skyline 36 collection now has a classic silver dial, adding to deep blue (pictured), ice blue, pastel green and pastel pink options, with straps to match. The silver dial (with choice of black strap or steel bracelet) is less girly, and will likely appeal to men with smaller-diameter size preferences. Because of the design, with its thick, octagonal bezel and 10.4mm case, it wears slightly bigger than its diameter would suggest.

Yes, this is a list of 36mm watches but this one deserves a little wiggle room. The downsized 37mm Octo Finissimo represents a 20% reduction from the 40mm model, and it was scaled from the movement out. The BVF 100 was based on the groundbreaking BVS 100 Solotempo ladies’ automatic caliber, launched last year in the Serpenti Seduttori — the BVF 100 is slightly wider but thinner — which powered that 34mm timepiece. But the BVF 100 delivers an epic 72-hour power reserve compared to the Solotempo’s 50 hours.

The new 36mm watch case size honors the dimensions of the original Laureato, launched in 1975. The trimmer version (there are also 39mm and 42mm time-only models with date) includes a reference with a new flinqué enamel dial, another with the signature enhanced clous de Paris patterned motif, and even one with a gem-set bezel, set with 64 diamonds (0.55 ct).

It seems appropriate that a watch celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Chopard manufacture in Fleurier should honor the size of the original 36.5mm model. Modern touches include the Lucent steel case, and the movement, L.U.C Caliber 96.40-L, a direct evolution of the first movement produced at the manufacture. It has a stop-seconds function and a 60-hour power reserve. The Areuse Blue dial is inspired by the Areuse River that flows near the brand’s factory in the Val-de-Travers region.

Case sizes for the iconic Patek Philippe World Time run between 36mm and 40mm, but started out in the 1930s much smaller than that, at around 31mm. The Ref. 7929J runs on the smaller side of current models, despite the complexity of its modern movement, the ultra-thin automatic 240 HU. The outstanding feature here is the lacquered carmine red dial center over a hand-guillochéd pattern. The alligator strap matches the inner dial.

The automatic Caliber L207.1, engineered to fit into a smaller case, debuts in the newly compact Saxonia Annual Calendar, measuring 36mm, down from 38.5mm (the original was launched in 2010 and phased out in 2021). Most scaled-down ultra-thin movements employ space-saving micro-rotors, but the L207.1 retains a central oscillating weight in platinum, to deliver a 60-hour power reserve. It features the German brand’s signature hand-engraved balance cock and screwed gold chatons.
